Issues

Access to safe and affordable drinking water is a basic human right. Unfortunately, many American families do not have a reliable source of clean water. From Flint, Michigan to California, contaminated local water supplies affect far too many communities across the country.

  • Contaminated drinking water can cause harm to the nervous, digestive, and reproductive systems and may lead to life threatening diseases such as cancer.
  • Low-income communities and communities of color often face the most severe and persistent drinking water contamination.
  • In 2014, 68 California schools served contaminated water to more than 24,000 children. Each year, nearly a million Californians are exposed to contaminated drinking water.
